Why Do I Never Feel Like I’m Enough?

When self-worth and confidence both feel out of reach.

A THOUGHT FROM ME

“What if the problem isn’t that you’re not enough? What if you’ve simply been measuring yourself against the wrong yardstick?”

DOES THIS SOUND FAMILIAR?

You may have achieved a lot in your life, supported other people, worked hard and pushed yourself to become a better version of yourself, yet still find that uncomfortable feeling sitting in the background telling you it isn’t quite enough.

The strange part is that the goal often keeps moving. You reach a milestone, solve a problem, achieve something important or receive recognition from somebody else, yet before long your attention has shifted to what still needs fixing, improving or achieving.

WHAT MAY REALLY BE HAPPENING?

What I often see underneath this is a confusion between confidence and self-worth. Confidence tends to grow through experience, competence and achievement, whereas self-worth sits much deeper because it influences how we see ourselves regardless of what we achieve.

When self-worth becomes attached to performance, approval, productivity, success or external validation, life can begin to feel like a test with no finish line. The mind becomes highly skilled at spotting where you’re falling short whilst becoming equally skilled at overlooking your strengths, progress and achievements. This is why so many capable people continue feeling inadequate despite evidence that suggests otherwise.

A DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE

Feeling enough may not come from raising your standards even higher, pushing yourself harder or becoming more impressive to the outside world.

The people I work with who struggle most with feeling enough are rarely lacking capability, resilience or potential. More often, they’re carrying beliefs that keep moving the finish line, which means no matter how much they do, achieve or give, it still never quite lands.

SOMETHING TO CONSIDER

What would change if your worth was no longer something you had to prove?
