COUNSELLING & PSYCHOTHERAPY

There are times in life when the struggle is not knowing what to do next but understanding what is really happening beneath the surface.

You may have spent months, years, or even decades carrying emotional weight that never seems to fully leave you. Perhaps there are experiences that still affect you more than you would like, emotions that feel difficult to understand, or patterns that continue repeating despite your best efforts to move beyond them.

Counselling and psychotherapy provide a safe, confidential space to slow down, explore openly, and gain a deeper understanding of yourself and your experiences. A space where you can feel genuinely heard, understood, valued, and supported while making sense of parts of your life that may never have been fully explored before.

For many people, the most surprising discovery is how much more sense their life begins to make when they finally see the bigger picture.

“Sometimes understanding starts beneath the surface.”

WHEN YOU’VE BEEN COPING ALONE FOR TOO LONG

You can become incredibly good at appearing okay. You go to work, look after other people, deal with responsibilities and keep doing what needs to be done. People may see you as capable, dependable and strong, while having little idea how different things feel underneath. Anxiety, low mood, stress or emotional overwhelm can gradually become part of everyday life until you barely remember what it feels like not to be carrying something in the background.

Sometimes the hardest part is admitting that coping is no longer enough. You might tell yourself other people have bigger problems, that you should be stronger or that eventually things will improve on their own. Yet constantly pushing through takes its toll. Reaching out for counselling is not about reaching breaking point. Sometimes it simply begins with recognising that your emotional wellbeing matters too, and that you no longer want to spend so much of your life just getting through it.

WHEN ANXIETY & OVERTHINKING TAKE OVER

Sometimes the most exhausting place to be is inside your own head. You replay conversations, question decisions, imagine everything that could go wrong or spend hours thinking about something you cannot change. One thought leads to another until something relatively small has taken over your entire evening. Even when you recognise that you are overthinking, knowing that does not necessarily make the worry, anxiety or mental noise stop.

Our thoughts influence how we feel, and those feelings can shape how we respond and behave. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) can help you slow that process down, recognise unhelpful patterns and question thoughts that have gradually started feeling like facts. The aim is not to force yourself to think positively, but to understand what your mind is doing, the effect it is having and develop different ways of responding when anxiety, worry, rumination or negative thinking begins taking over.

WHEN YOU FEEL LONELY, DISCONNECTED OR NOT YOURSELF

Loneliness is not always about being physically alone. You can have people around you, relationships, family or a busy life and still feel deeply disconnected or as though nobody really understands what is happening underneath. Over time, you may withdraw more, lose interest in things you once enjoyed or begin wondering why life feels flatter, smaller or less fulfilling than it used to.

Low mood, loneliness and emotional disconnection can develop gradually, making them surprisingly easy to accept as normal. Counselling gives you somewhere to understand what has changed, explore what may be keeping you disconnected and begin rebuilding a stronger relationship with yourself and the people and experiences that matter to you.

WHEN SELF-DOUBT & LOW SELF-WORTH HOLD YOU BACK

The way you see yourself can quietly influence almost every part of your life. Low self-esteem, self-doubt or never feeling quite good enough can affect your relationships, decisions, confidence and willingness to put yourself forward. Criticism may stay with you far longer than praise, you may constantly compare yourself with others or find yourself seeking reassurance and approval before trusting your own judgement.

Counselling and therapy can help you understand where these beliefs about yourself came from and why they have become so powerful. As self-understanding grows, it becomes possible to challenge the patterns that keep reinforcing them, develop greater self-worth and begin making decisions from a stronger sense of who you are rather than from fear, criticism or the need to please others.

WHEN THE SAME OLD EMOTIONS & PATTERNS KEEP RETURNING

You might recognise the same feelings appearing in completely different parts of your life. Rejection hurts more deeply than you think it should. Criticism stays with you. Conflict makes you withdraw, approval becomes unusually important or certain relationships repeatedly leave you feeling insecure, angry or not good enough. You can tell yourself not to react that way, yet when the situation happens again, the same emotional response seems to arrive before you have had time to think.

Therapy can help us look beyond the immediate situation and understand what may be happening underneath. Earlier relationships, experiences and ways of protecting ourselves can continue influencing how we think, feel and respond today. Recognising these connections can make reactions that once seemed confusing far more understandable and create the opportunity to respond differently rather than repeatedly finding yourself pulled back into the same patterns.

WHEN LIFE CHANGES & YOU’RE NOT SURE WHAT COMES NEXT

Major life changes can affect far more than your circumstances. Retirement, children leaving home, changes within relationships, getting older or reaching a stage of life that looks very different from the one you knew can leave you questioning your identity, purpose and what comes next. Even changes you expected or chose can bring uncertainty, loneliness or a surprising sense of loss.

Counselling can give you space to make sense of that transition rather than simply trying to adjust to it. It can help you understand what this stage of life means to you, reconnect with parts of yourself that may have been pushed aside and explore what you want the next chapter of your life to look and feel like.

WHEN LIFE BEGINS TO FEEL LIGHTER AGAIN

Progress in counselling and therapy often becomes noticeable in ordinary moments. Your mind feels quieter, difficult thoughts no longer take over as easily and conversations that once stayed with you for days begin to lose their hold. You may feel more able to say what you need, trust your own judgement and handle difficult emotions without them controlling everything around them.

Over time, there can be greater confidence, clearer boundaries, healthier relationships and more emotional space for the parts of life that matter to you. The aim is not to become somebody different, but to understand yourself more deeply and feel more able to live as the person underneath everything you have been carrying.

As a qualified and accredited counsellor, experienced therapist and life coach, I offer counselling, therapy and life coaching through private face-to-face sessions from our therapy rooms in Skipton, supporting clients across Yorkshire and the surrounding areas, as well as online throughout the UK. Sessions provide a safe, confidential space where you can talk openly and feel genuinely heard and understood.

What works for one person will not always work for another, which is why every journey is bespoke to you.

Together, we’ll create an approach that fits your life, your availability and the level of support that feels right for you.
