A THOUGHT FROM ME
“Sometimes the reason you don’t feel like yourself anymore is because you’ve spent so long being who everyone else needed you to be.”
DOES THIS SOUND FAMILIAR?
You may look at your life and struggle to explain exactly what’s wrong. From the outside, everything might appear relatively normal, yet something feels different. You don’t quite feel as engaged, energised or connected to life as you once did.
There can be a sense that you’ve drifted away from something important, although putting your finger on what that is feels surprisingly difficult. You know you’re functioning, coping and getting through life, yet somehow you don’t feel fully like you anymore.
WHAT MAY REALLY BE HAPPENING
Losing yourself rarely happens overnight. It usually happens one small compromise at a time.
Life has a way of pulling us in different directions. Responsibilities grow, expectations increase and priorities change. Over time, it can become easy to focus so heavily on what needs doing, who needs you and what is expected of you that you gradually lose connection with your own wants, needs and identity.
This is often why emotional exhaustion, lack of fulfilment, low motivation and a feeling of being disconnected from yourself can begin to appear. The issue is not always that something is wrong. Sometimes you’ve simply spent so long adapting to life that you’ve stopped checking whether the life you’re living still reflects who you are.
A DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE
Maybe this feeling is not a sign that you’ve lost yourself completely.
Maybe it’s a sign that a part of you has been waiting patiently to be heard again. The part that knows what matters to you, what feels meaningful and what makes you feel most alive has not disappeared. It may simply have become quieter than everything else competing for your attention.
SOMETHING TO CONSIDER
If nobody else’s expectations mattered for a moment, what would you want more of in your life right now?
